How it works

A golf one and done pool, with a survivor pool built in

Top & Flop is a season-long fantasy golf game for a group of friends. Every PGA Tour week you make two picks, each golfer can only be used once a season, and the prize money decides the standings.

Two picks, every week

Your Top is the golfer you think will win. You earn his official prize money for the week.

Your Flop is a contender you think will have a bad week. If your Flop earns more than your Top, his entire earnings are taken off your total — not the difference. If he earns the same or less, it costs you nothing.

In the app these are called your Winner pick and your Loser pick.

A worked example

Your Top earnsYour Flop earnsPenaltyYour week
$500,000$200,000$0+$500,000
$500,000$800,000$800,000−$300,000
$50,000$0 (missed the cut)$0+$50,000

Standings rank on everything your Tops earned, minus every Flop penalty.

One and done: each golfer once a season

Once you use a golfer as your Top, you can't use him as your Top again that season. The same goes for your Flop. The two are separate, so a golfer you used as a Top is still available as a Flop. Picking the favourite this week means not having him for a major later — that tension is the game.

The survivor pool

Running alongside the money race is a survivor pool. You stay alive as long as your Flop never wins a tournament. The week your Flop wins — or the week you don't submit a Flop — you're out. Eliminated players keep playing for prize money and keep making both picks every week.

No picking longshots to flop

Picking a 500-to-1 outsider to flop would be free money, so your Flop has to be a real contender: priced at +5000 or shorter to win on FanDuel when you pick him. A golfer with no price posted at all is allowed. Your league can set a different limit.

Deadlines, late picks and missed weeks

Picks lock at the first tee time of the tournament, and everyone's picks stay hidden until then.

Picking late. Miss the deadline and you can still pick once round 1 is over, until round 2 starts. A late Top earns $0 for the week. A late Flop has to be someone who was inside the odds limit before the start and is in the top 10 after round 1 — so being late never lets you pick a golfer who's already struggling. Leagues can choose a stricter or looser version.

Missing a pick. The two picks count separately. Miss your Top and you earn $0 that week, and a random golfer you haven't used yet is spent. Miss your Flop and you're out of the survivor pool, and by default the best-finishing golfer you had left becomes your Flop. Leagues can instead charge the champion's earnings, the average of what everyone else earned, or a fixed amount.

Withdrawals and team events

If your golfer withdraws before the tournament starts, pick someone else. If you don't, the site picks for you and records why: for a Top, whoever took his place in the field; for a Flop, a random eligible golfer. Once play has started, your pick stands.

At the one team event on the schedule, you pick a whole two-man team as your Top and another as your Flop. Both golfers count, and all four are used up for the season.

Questions

Is this a golf one and done pool?

Yes, with a second pick added. The Top half is a classic one-and-done: one golfer a week, each golfer once a season, prize money as points. The Flop half adds risk every week, and a survivor pool to go with it.

How is it different from a regular golf survivor pool?

In most survivor pools you pick someone to do well and are out when they don't. Here you survive by picking someone to not win — and you're still playing for prize money whether you survive or not.

Does the site handle entry fees or payouts?

No. Prize money on the site is a way of keeping score. Whatever your league plays for is between you.

Can we move our existing league over?

Yes. A league admin can import a past season's picks, and the site rebuilds the standings from them.

Can our league change the rules?

Yes: which weeks you play, the odds limit on Flops, how late and missed picks are handled, and what each week counts for. The Tour Championship counts for half by default, because its prize money would otherwise decide the season on its own.
